Deciding which plan to sign up for

Which package will meet my requirements? This is a question every webmaster will ask himself before signing up for web hosting. The main difference between hosting plans is their main ingredient - disk space and bandwidth.

To determine how much disk space and monthly data transfer you are going to need you have to look into the content that you are going to host. There is a lot of difference between hosting a simple html/text site and a heavy multimedia site with pictures, galleries, audio and video data.

Some hosting companies offer what seems to be a huge amount of disk space and monthly transfer, but don't be too happy before learning the truth. They are overselling. This means that if all customers on that server decide to use all of the disk space and bandwidth that they have purchased, the server will most likely fall apart. So cheaper is not always better. You should better look for an honest company that offers a reasonable amount of disk space and bandwidth at a fair price. This is the best value for your money.

If your website is already created, check the directory to see how big it is. If you're not planning to extend it soon, add up about 30% reserve and you will determine how much disk space you will need. Don't forget to include any databases you will probably use and the quota for your e-mails. It is always better to have a reserve instead of finding out that you can't receive any more e-mails just because your quota usage has reached 100%.

The other thing is bandwidth. Having a reserve with bandwidth is even more important if you want to make sure that your website will be up 24/7. You need to know how many visitors your website will expect every day so you can calculate how much data transfer you will need. It is better to start with a bigger package and constantly monitor your statistics to see what eats up most of the bandwidth. Then you can adjust your package according to your needs, or upgrade it if you have plans for a better future.
